WOLONG New Energy’s 500 MW Wind Power and Grid-Forming Energy Storage Project Successfully Connected to the Grid

August 8, 2026 — WOLONG New Energy’s 500 MW wind power and grid-forming energy storage demonstration project in Baotou, Inner Mongolia, has successfully connected to the 500 kV Kailinhe Substation of the West Inner Mongolia Power Grid.

Invested and developed by WOLONG New Energy and constructed and operated by Shunfeng New Energy (Damao Banner) Co., Ltd., the project marks an important milestone for one of Inner Mongolia’s first pilot projects integrating grid-forming wind power and energy storage.

The successful grid connection demonstrates WOLONG’s continued investment in renewable energy and advanced power technologies, while supporting the development of a more stable and flexible power system with a growing share of renewable generation.

500 MW of Wind Power with Advanced Energy Storage

The project has a total installed capacity of 500 MW and consists of:

  • 50 wind turbines, each with a rated capacity of 10 MW

  • 5 grid-forming wind turbines featuring advanced grid-supporting capabilities

  • A 220 kV step-up substation

  • A 125 MW / 250 MWh grid-forming lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery energy storage system

By combining large-scale wind generation with grid-forming energy storage, the project is designed to improve renewable energy integration while providing additional support to the regional power grid.

Grid-Forming Technology for Renewable Energy Integration

Grid-forming technology is an important development in modern renewable energy systems.

Traditional grid-following power converters generally synchronize their operation with an existing grid voltage and frequency. Grid-forming technology, by contrast, can actively establish and regulate voltage and frequency characteristics within the limits of the system design.

In this project, coordinated control between the wind turbines and energy storage system enables the plant to actively support the grid through functions including:

  • Frequency regulation

  • Voltage regulation

  • Fast power response

  • Grid stability support

  • Renewable energy integration

These capabilities become increasingly valuable as wind and solar generation account for a larger share of electricity production.

Efficient Renewable Power Transmission

The project is connected to the 500 kV West Inner Mongolia Power Grid, providing a high-voltage transmission interface for the large-scale renewable power generated by the project.

The project’s transmission system is designed to control line losses to below 3.8%, helping improve the efficiency of renewable electricity delivery.

The combination of high-capacity wind generation, grid-forming energy storage, and high-voltage transmission provides an integrated solution for connecting large-scale renewable energy resources to the power grid.

Expanding WOLONG’s New Energy Capabilities

The Baotou project is part of WOLONG’s broader strategy to develop integrated renewable energy solutions covering wind, solar, energy storage, and hydrogen.

WOLONG is continuing to develop demonstration projects and technologies that combine power generation, energy storage, power electronics, intelligent control, and grid-supporting technologies.

Following the successful grid connection of the Weijun large-scale independent energy storage project, the Baotou wind power and grid-forming energy storage project further strengthens WOLONG’s experience in large-scale energy storage and renewable energy integration.

Toward More Stable and Flexible Renewable Energy Systems

Following the successful grid connection, the project will proceed with full-capacity grid connection testing, commissioning, and acceptance.

The project team will continue to optimize the operation and management of the grid-forming wind and energy storage system, with the aim of developing an operational model that can be replicated in other regions with high renewable energy penetration.

As the global energy transition accelerates, large-scale renewable generation must increasingly work together with energy storage, advanced power electronics, and intelligent grid control.
